University world league table rankings

1st Times Higher Education (THE)

The University of Edinburgh was again ranked first in the world, scoring 100 out of 100 for its contribution to United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 9, "Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure".

 

7th Quacquarelli Symonds (QS)

The University was recognised for its leadership on environmental and social impact placing 7th in the world for Sustainability.

Student numbers (including Online Distance Learning)

2025: 49,640

2024: 49,485

Student numbers increase in the year was 0.3% overall. There was little variance to prior year at UG, PGT and PGR levels. However, there was an increase in non-EU overseas students across domiciles that more than offset reductions in Scotland, rest of UK and EU students.

 

Total income

2025: £1,477 million

2024: £1,434 million

2023: £1,385 million

 

Total income increased by £43m. Tuition fees contributed the largest rise, growing £29m in the year. Other income and research income also grew while investment income has reduced.

Earnings Before Interest, Taxation, Depreciation & Amortisation (EBITDA)1

2025: £96 million

2024: £84 million

2023: £148 million 

EBITDA achieved in the year was 6.5% of income, below budget set for the year. The financial review provides further commentary on income and expenditure in the year and resulting surplus and EBITDA.

Capital expenditure

2025: £207 million

2024: £186 million

2023: £165 million

 

Capital expenditure (including spend on intangibles) exceeded £200m, increasing by £21m in the year. Spend on land and buildings of £149m accounts for 72% of total spend with fixtures, fittings and equipment spend being £57m in the year.
