Every staff member is entitled to take one day of paid leave each year to volunteer: A Day to Make a Difference. Staff can use this day to volunteer for a charity, organisation or good cause that they care about. Some teams might want to volunteer as a group, and the Edinburgh Local team are happy to help find an opportunity that works for your team. Don’t have an idea on how to use your day? Visit the Edinburgh Local pages for inspiration and links to resources to help you find a volunteering opportunity. To use your day, you need to request it through People and Money. When adding the absence, choose ‘Special Paid Leave’, then ‘Volunteering Activities’. You can your day at any time during the year, and, just like annual leave, it must be signed off by your line manager. Increasing the take-up of A Day to Make a Difference is a key commitment in the University’s new Community Plan. If we all used our day of paid leave, we would collectively give back more than 100,000 hours back to our local communities.
