Finance partners up with our student body

As Finance staff at the University, we are all committed to the academic mission of the University, and we’re exploring new and innovative ways we can have meaningful interactions with our student body.

We know there are lots of ways we could be collaborating with students to enhance the student experience here at Edinburgh, and also that as finance staff, we have a vast array of expertise that we could offer to our students. Interested? Read on!

Finance mentor opportunity

We are seeking volunteers from the Finance community across the University to meet with the Treasurers of some of the Student Clubs and Societies to help them with any questions they may have around their obligations as treasurers - particularly with regard to the financial reporting they are required to do. This can be the year end return to EUSA or possibly a Treasurers report to their own committee. It may also cover good practice around the keeping of financial records during the year.

We currently have approximately 35 Treasurers who have expressed an interest in this new initiative.

Who can volunteer?

The type of people we are looking for to volunteer are those who work within the wider finance community at the University, and who would have an interest in providing this kind of support. You don’t need to have any specialist expertise, as we will provide full training to you.

What would it entail?

The idea would be that our finance mentors would meet individually with each of the Treasurers for approximately an hour and would see how they can help. Further details to follow, but it’s likely that these sessions would take place either in CSH or at the Pleasance Café.

At the moment this is a trial, however we would hope that it will be successful and if so we would look to put a permanent arrangement in place whereby Treasurers could engage for help as and when they need it.

This voluntary role will need to be agreed with your line manager and Head of College/School, but if you are interested in the first instance, please contact Anne.Marie.Gregory@ed.ac.uk if you are interested in taking part and Anne Marie will be able to take through the next appropriate steps to take.
