Global shortage electronic components

As you may be aware from recent TV and press coverage, there is a global shortage of various electronic elements, including chips and other components for computing equipment.

This is having an impact on manufacturing and lead-times from all suppliers, including HP, where we source much of our  IT equipment.

Unfortunately this means that in recent months, it hasn’t been possible to deliver equipment within expected timelines. We ask for your patience during this frustrating time, and while these delays are largely due to external factors outwith our control, we are liaising with our suppliers to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.  We’re working closely with with IS and are doing all we can to help resolve urgent issues.

For this reason, we ask that emails to Procurement tracking individual requests are kept to a minimum unless absolutely necessary, as this will only impact already limited resources. Wait times can currently be up to 10 weeks, so please wait this length of time before emailing to check the status of your equipment.

We do understand your concerns and are doing everything we can, but reiterate this is due to a global supply chain problem.

It is also important to note that individuals should not be buying equipment locally or online as these devices are not approved or supported for our managed desktop and network, and as such, requests of this type cannot be facilitated. This type of procurement impacts our costs, could lead to maintenance and other support issues, as well as the potential of double ordering with any University requests.

We continue to monitor and manage the situation and appreciate your patience and understanding during this time.

Further update communications will continue to be provided.
