Online meditation and yoga available

Online yoga and meditation classes are available for Finance colleagues.

Mediation

Many people will be aware of what has been written about the power of meditation, especially in regards to our mental health and how helpful it can be to manage stress. Due to the current, ongoing situation and the difficulties many people are having with working from home and home schooling (or both) this may be a good time to explore it a bit more.

An Ishaya Monk who  teaches the Ascension method has offered to hold a few online meditation sessions for the University to introduce some technique’s that may be helpful. It won’t be a lecture and the sessions will be around 20 minutes long, with the aim of ensuring that everyone ends the session with the tools that will enable them to tap in to ‘stillness’. You won’t need a dark room, incense or to sit on the floor cross legged (and there definitely won’t be chanting!).  You can sit at your desk and just close your eyes.

The sessions will be free of charge and you don’t need to sign up for anything or give out your details. If this sounds like something that you  may benefit  from, please contact Maureen Connolly on v1mconn8@ed.ac.uk  and as soon as we can set up a date we will send out the invitation on Teams.

Yoga

Eva, who provided yoga classes in Charles Stewart House pre-lockdown, is offering online classes for Finance colleagues. Yoga promotes well-being by helping to improve flexibility and strength, and can help with relaxation. This can be especially helpful if you’ve been working at an improvised home office.

The yoga classes which used to be held in Charles Stewart House have continued through lockdown, but are now delivered on zoom, and spaces are now available on those classes.

What you need to know

  • All Finance staff can attend, not just those based in Charles Stewart House.
  • Beginners are welcome, all ages are welcome, most people in the class had not done any yoga when they first started
  • Classes last 45 minutes, and are held on Monday and Wednesday lunchtimes. 12-30 to 1.45
  • You can do it in your own home, so you don’t need any equipment, not even a yoga mat.
  • Currently there is an offer to join any of the classes for free as a trial, for the first 2 weeks of August.
  • If after the trial you feel the benefits and would like to continue, the cost would be £6 per class.
