Have you checked your state pension entitlement?

You can check your entitlement to the state pension you will receive on retirement via your Personal Tax Account or by keying “personal tax account” into Google to find out more. Within your Personal Tax Account, there is a pensions section which allows you to view your state pension forecast and national insurance contributions. You will be given an indication of whether there is a potential gap between the state pension you have earned and the maximum state pension you are entitled to receive. If there is a gap, there is an indication of how long you need to continue to contribute National Insurance to reach your forecast.

If you are unlikely to have paid the required 10 years of National Insurance contributions to qualify for a state pension before you retire, you could consider paying any missing contributions.

HRMC have guidance explaining your state pension which is available here. Royal London have also published their guide to topping up a state pension which provides further information.

Please note that your state pension is not the same as your University pension e.g. USS, SBS, NEST etc.
