We spent a minute with Insurance Manager Geraldine Halliday who tells us about unexpected insurance queries involving dissecting knives, student flats and University artwork…. Image What is an average day like for you at the University? I don’t know – I never have an average day. Insurance is a busy section and we receive all sorts of enquiries. Most of them are what we’d expect (how do I make a claim, how do I insure a piece of equipment) to some that we don’t expect (what clothing do I need to take with me for a trip to Malawi, can I take my dissecting knives with me as hand baggage, does the University insure employee’s dogs whilst on University premises and can I claim for my teddy bear which has been damaged during a flood in my flat). What’s the best thing about working in the Finance Department? The best thing - no two days are the same. In one day, I can be accompanying the Loss Adjuster to look at a water damaged student flat (and wondering how many dishes it’s possible to leave in a sink), meeting with students to discuss insurance aspects of a new project they’re working on and arranging insurance for artwork the University are borrowing for an exhibition. We’re always looking a different at ways to ensure safe travel and are currently looking at a travel app, to provide staff and students with real time information and assistance when they are travelling. Outside of work? I enjoy travelling and in September I was in Singapore (I was at the F1 Grand Prix) and Malaysia, both of which were fantastic places to visit. I enjoy catching up with family and friends as well as a wee gin and tonic on a Friday evening! This article was published on 2024-07-01
